Welcome from the Director

Dr. Kelsey Leonard, PhD, JD, MSc

I am thrilled to extend a warm welcome to you as the Director of the Christmas Tree Lab at the University of Waterloo's School of Environment, Resources, and Sustainability. As we embark on this journey, I am excited to introduce you to our innovative community-engaged research lab and our brand-new website, designed to be your gateway to the fascinating world of Christmas tree sustainability.

In the heart of Southern Ontario, our lab stands as a hub of exploration, focusing on climate change adaptation science and the Christmas tree industry. Christmas trees hold a special place in cultural traditions across Canada and around the world, and at the Christmas Tree Lab, we are committed to understanding how the farmers who support these cherished traditions are evolving in the face of environmental challenges.

Our mission is clear: to analyze the effects of climate change on the Ontario Christmas tree industry. We believe in the power of research to illuminate the path forward, and our dedicated team of researchers is working to document the experiences of Christmas tree growers. By understanding their challenges and triumphs, we aim to develop practical solutions that will contribute to the resilience and sustainability of this unique industry.

One of the exciting initiatives we're undertaking is the development of an ecological calendar. This tool will not only assist farmers in navigating the dynamic climate but will also serve as a valuable resource for documenting future climatic changes across regions and Christmas tree sectors. It's about empowering farmers with knowledge and providing them with the tools they need to thrive in an ever-changing environment.

Our commitment extends beyond research; it's about fostering partnerships and collaboration. We recognize that the key to sustainable solutions lies in unity. By increasing collaboration between Christmas tree growers and local Conservation Authorities, we aim to advance conservation initiatives that will not only benefit the industry but also contribute to the broader environmental well-being of our region.

This website serves as a window into our lab's endeavours, and I encourage you to explore the various sections to learn more about our ongoing projects, our team of dedicated researchers, and the impact we hope to make. We're not just studying climate change; we're cultivating collaborations, nurturing sustainable practices, and building a community that cares deeply about the future of Christmas trees.

I invite you to join us on this exciting journey. Whether you're a Christmas tree enthusiast, a farmer, a conservationist, or simply someone curious about the world around you, there's a place for you in our community. Your insights, questions, and collaboration are integral to our mission.

Thank you for visiting our website, and I look forward to sharing more updates, insights, and discoveries with you in the future. Together, let's ensure a sustainable and joyous future for Christmas trees.

Warm regards,

Dr. Kelsey Leonard
